Infrastructure investment is to be speeded up in order to turn Wuhan’s Yangluo terminal, located in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, into a major shipping
centre by 2015.Wuhan government officials have promised to complete five major expressway projects including one leading to the airport, and a rail project. “The investment will have significant impact on the port,” David Lammie of Yangtze Business Services tells Port Strategy.
Mr Lammie explains that as it is a greenfield development it has room for development, and further, “it suffers from fewer air and water draught limitations than locations upstream - including Yangsi - and therefore can accommodate larger vessels.”
The second phase of Yangluo will be completed by the end of this year, by which time the terminal will have a handling capacity of 1m teu. Vessels of up to 5,000 dwt can be accommodated. Apart from improving Yangluo’s intermodal capability, the local government will focus on the construction of Yangluo Bonded Logistics Park.
Yangluo is part of the Wuhan new port zone, which consists of 27 facilities centring on Wuhan with neighbouring E'zhou, Huanggang and Xianning playing a supporting role. Together throughput reached 100 million tons in 2010 and the region has seen substantial increases this year.
