Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding each with a shipping and marine industry company, allowing these companies to tap into UMT's expertise.
UMT Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Aziz Deraman said Iris Marine Sdn Bhd, which deals with aquaculture and resort islands, wanted the university's expertise in lobster rearing while Global Carriers Bhd wanted to obtain UMT's nautical science students for training and absorb them as employees.
"Before we inked the MoU, we have cooperated with these companies in the past year. There are currently more than 200 companies actively working with UMT in various fields," he told Bernama after the ceremony.
Dr Aziz represented UMT while Iris Marine Sdn Bhd was represented by its Managing Director, Mokhtar Mohd.
Global Carriers Bhd was represented by Chief Executive Officer Nora Azrina Azlan.
Meanwhile, Mokhtar, when met, said they have long established a quiet working relationship with UMT on lobster rearing.
"We are aware of UMT's expertise in the area, so we would like them to carry out a study on successful lobster rearing," he said.
Global Carriers' Nora Azrina said the company was keen to train UMT students at sea.
She said Global Carriers owned tanker vessels which collaborated with Petronas to ferry petrol to Asean countries such as Myanmar and Vietnam, but most of the crew members were foreigners.
"The cooperation with UMT is crucial so that we can train their students and have them work with us in the future," she added.
