The Taiwanese Shipping Company Wisdom Marine Lines S.A. has awarded Germanischer Lloyd with the classification of five new bulk carriers. The vessels are currently build at a Japanese shipyard and will be surveyed by the Hamburg based classification society. GL is represented by an office in Kaohsiung. It is planning to open up a country office in Taipei soon. The signing ceremony for the five 24,000 DWT bulk carriers has been celebrated at a customer event in Taipei. James C. S. Lan, Chairman of
Wisdom Marine Lines, and Dr Volkmar Wasmansdorff, Senior Vice President
and Managing Director Region Asia/Pacific of Germanischer Lloyd (GL),
signed the contract.
The signing ceremony was part of a celebration
highlighting the close relationship between the Taiwanese shipping
company and GL. Wisdom Marine Lines S.A. has already been working
together with GL for several years. The company was founded in 1999
with headquarters based in Taipei. Wisdom Marine Lines S.A. has a fleet
of 30 vessels and as many as 28 ships under construction. It has one of
the youngest fleets in the region. The fleet includes panamax container
vessels, handy-max and handy-size bulk carriers as well as
multi-purpose ships.
The classification society Germanischer Lloyd conducts safety surveys
on board of more than 6,600 ships with about 75 Mio GT. The new Bulk
Carriers will receive a Certificate of Class for both the hull and
machinery. It is valid for 5 years during which time Annual and
Intermediate Surveys are conducted to insure that the vessel is
maintained in a safe condition. At the end of five years a thorough
survey of the hull and machinery is performed before a new Certificate
of Class is issued. This schedule is based on the assumption of normal
maintenance and conscientious repair.
GL is one of the leading classification societies which establishes and
applies technical standards in relation to the design, construction and
survey of ships and offshore structures. The mission of classification
societies is to contribute to the development and implementation of
technical standards for the protection of life, property and the
environment. GL is authorized as Recognised Organisations for Flag
States, verifying the same vessel's compliance with international
and/or national statutory regulations.
GL has its Head Office in Hamburg and maintains a global network of 208
offices in 77 countries in order to offer surveys for its maritime
clients in all ports of this world. GL has a staff of 4,400 employees,
engineers and other experts.
