The British Virgin Islands is taking positive steps to intensify its shipping registry. It is participating in the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, which is considered the biggest boat show in the world. The show which attracts hundreds of boats from all parts of the world will be held between October 30 and November 3.
Premier Ralph O'Neal said that it was a challenge to attain Category
One Status, but an even bigger challenge was now to market it, and he
anticipates that the shipping industry will, like the financial
services sector, be one the major revenue earners for the territory.
The BVI is being represented by officials from the International
Finance Centre, V.I. Shipping Registry, Tourist Board and Customs.
The Head of the Shipping Registry, Captain Baboucar Sallah, said that
the Fort Lauderdale Show will be an opportune time for the territory to
showcase to the world that it can register ships up to 3,000 tons and
cargo ships of unlimited tonnage.
He said that there are several advantages to register in the BVI,
including the low initial registration and maintenance fees, readily
available corporate and legal services, the high reliable network of
offices and industry experts as well as the BVI's recognition as a
reputable financial centre and leading world corporate formation and
related services.
