On Monday the three most significant bodies in Swedish shipping – the Swedish Maritime Administration, Ports of Sweden and the Swedish Shipowners' Association, signed an agreement to stimulate greater use of onshore power supply. The ceremony took place at the Port of Gothenburg,
which was the first port in World to use high-voltage, onshore power
supply. The Port of Gothenburg is also a driving force in the World
Ports Climate Initiative, where the port is leading the way in
developing onshore power supply.
Also attending the ceremony was a
representative from the government, Lena Asplund, Moderate Party MP and
party fiscal affairs spokeswoman. She explained that the government is
in agreement that onshore power supply will not be subject to tax. This
makes Sweden the first country in the world to abolish the tax.
At
present around ten vessels are supplied with onshore power supply in
Gothenburg, including the vessels operated by the pulp and paper group
Stora Enso, which have been linked since 2000, as well as several Stena
Line ferries.
The Port of Gothenburg is also planning to extend the power supply to more berths in line with the increase in demand.
