China's energy supply totaled about 655 million tons of standard coal equivalent in the first quarter, up 3.45 percent over the same year earlier period, with the growth rate up 1.65 percentage points over the fourth quarter last year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) Wednesday.
The official data showed that energy consumption for unit GDP production posted year-on-year decline in this period.
NBS pointed out the first quarter saw energy consumption of basic
industries such as power and key raw materials sectors rise and that of
key energy consuming enterprises climb by four months running since
November 2008.
NBS added that energy consumption for unit GDP production continued to
fall in the first quarter since the economic structure transformation
raised efficiency in energy utilization and energy consumption for
industrial added value generally decreased.
Coal and electricity consumption went up in this period while crude oil consumption slumped sharply.
In the first three months, China consumed about 649 million tons of
coal and 781 billion kwh of electricity, up 2.69 percent and down 4.02
percent, respectively, year on year, with the growth rate up 10.71
percentage points and 1.98 percentage points over the fourth quarter
last year.
It meanwhile consumed 57.35 million tons of product oil, down 6.35
percent year on year, with the growth rate down 3.83 percentage points
from the fourth quarter last year.
