The Indian Maritime University (IMU) is planning to open centres in various maritime States in the country such as Orissa, Gujarat, Karnataka and Goa to meet the growing demand for trained professionals in the maritime sector, Dr P. Vijayan, Vice-Chancellor of IMU, has said.
Headquartered in Chennai, the IMU has campuses in Chennai, Mumbai,
Kolkata and Visakhapatnam. Established on November 14, 2008 by an Act
of Parliament, the IMU is set to play a key role in the development of
human resource for the maritime sector.
Wide focus
Dr Vijayan, who was here in connection with the opening of the first
centre of the IMU in the country at Kochi, said that the varsity will
provide and promote maritime studies, training and research in all
branches of learning in the maritime sector.
The IMU offers graduate, post-graduate and doctoral programmes to cater to the needs of the maritime fraternity.
Degrees and diplomas
It offers one-year Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) leading to the
award of B.Sc degree in Nautical Science, three-year B.Sc degree in
Nautical Science; four-year B.E. in Marine Engineering, four-year
B.Tech in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering.
According to Dr Vijayan, a two-year MBA in Shipping and Port
Management, a two-year MBA in International Transportation and
Logistics Management and a one-year executive MBA in Maritime
Management are on the anvil.
Institutes
The IMU has under its fold seven Government maritime training and
research institutes that include the National Maritime Academy,
Chennai; the Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI), Mumbai;
the Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies and
Research, Mumbai; the Training Ship Chanakya, Navi Mumbai; the National
Ship Design and Research Centre, Vizg; the Indian Institute of Port
Management, Kolkata; and the MERI, Kolkata.
