maerskgif_thumb_thumb_thumb_thumb.gifMaersk Line plans to stop making calls at Chennai port from January, according to shipping industry sources. The port will be dropped from the shipping line's MECL 2 service in a bid to run the service at a slower speed, it is learnt. This will sever the port's direct link with Mediterranean and US east coast ports. Chennai will be served by feeder service to and from Colombo and the new port rotation of MECL 2 will be Colombo- Salalah-Jeddah-Aqaba-Port Said-Algeciras-New York- Savannah-Houston-Norfolk-Algeciras-Port Said- Djibouti-Colombo. The service will continue to be operated with 10 ships of the capacity ranging from 4,500 TEU to 5,500 TEUs, it is learnt.
