SCI was established by the Government of India with an objective to

shipping company owning barely a fleet of 0.2 million DWT, SCI has come
a long way and has now emerged as the largest Indian shipping company
owning a truly diversified fleet of more than 5 million DWT
representing more than one third of India's total tonnage. Recognizing
the efficiency and financial performance of SCI, the Government of
India conferred the coveted Navratna status on SCI on August 1, 2008.
