Eniram Ltd, provider of dynamic decision support systems for the shipping industry, has today announced that Hapag-Lloyd AG, one of the largest container shipping lines in the world, will be deploying the first installation of the Dynamic
Trimming Assistant (DTA) on their container vessel, Osaka Express, at the beginning of December 2010.
Hapag-Lloyd was one of the first shipping companies to reduce the speed
of its vessels, which significantly reduces fuel consumption and
environmental impact. The installation of DTA adds another
environmentally-friendly initiative aimed at reducing the carbon
footprint of their ships and to provide the “Green” logistics solution
that shippers are continuing to demand.
So far, DTA has demonstrated fuel consumption savings of 1% - 5% on
similar vessels. DTA has been deployed successfully by another key
international container line, as well as major cruise lines, where the
proven fuel reduction from the system has led to the roll-out of DTA
across their fleet.
Osaka Express, along with it’s 17 sister ships, is a 8,750 TEU vessel
and will have 3 Eniram attitude sensors installed to ensure an accurate
measure of current trim can be calculated at all times. The Eniram
system also collects data such as propulsion power, vessel draft and
movement and other variables such as weather and waves. This data is
then analysed and an optimum trim level, based on this real-time data,
is displayed in an easy to use ”traffic light” graphical interface
guiding the Osaka Express crew to make appropriate adjustments. As a
result the crew can be confident that the vessel will move through the
water as efficiently as possible.
“I am delighted that Hapag-Lloyd joins our growing list of world class
shipping companies implementing DTA as part of their continuous
improvement initiatives to reduce fuel consumption and minimise
emissions” commented Philip Padfield, CEO of Eniram. “We are absolutely
committed to helping Hapag Lloyd achieve its operational efficiencies
and play a part in their emissions reduction goals”.
